Healthy Aging Month

These seniors look forward to their annual eye exams. Are you seeking an optometrist for better eye health and performance?

September is Healthy Aging Month, a time when seniors are asked to focus on their health, lifestyle, energy, and making the most of their senior years. At Sevigny & Associates Eye Care in Wauchula, Lake Placid, Sebring, & Arcadia, Florida, we understand the importance of eye care when it comes to our senior patients. As you may know, in Florida, once you turn 80, eye exams are required to renew your Florida's driver's license. Annual eye exams for seniors, however, should start long before their 80th birthday.

Vision Problems Associated with Aging

Annual eye exams for seniors can detect a number of vision problems and potential vision problems. Common issues to be aware of as we age include:

  • Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) – AMD is the single leading cause of blindness for those entering their senior years. Treatment will depend on the type of AMD a patient has and may include laser surgery, supplements, and/or medication.
  • Cataracts – This is a common vision disorder when aging and involves the lens of the eye gradually clouding. While it may initially be managed with stronger prescription lenses, eventually surgery will be likely.
  • Glaucoma – This is a building of pressure in the eye that, if left untreated, will eventually cost a patient their vision. If doctors can catch it quickly enough, vision loss can be prevented.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy – Diabetic patients are at risk of sight loss from this eye disease. Very small blood vessels in the eye become damaged, allowing fluids to seep into the eye. Treatment will include surgery and a change in diet is often recommended.
