Cataracts Awareness Month

Happy Cataracts Awareness Month! June has been designated the month to spread awareness of cataracts, a leading cause of vision loss and blindness throughout the globe. Currently, the eye condition affects more than 24 million people in the United States. Cataracts are a serious condition that can alter a person's quality of health.

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is the clouding of the eye's lens. The intraocular lens clouding will lead to a decrease in vision, as well as blurry vision, faded colors, halos, and light sensitivity. The loss of vision can also have an impact on your mental health, leading to depression. Cataracts are more common among aging populations, but it can also be caused by trauma, radiation exposure, diabetes, cigarette smoking, or genetic factors.

How to Prevent Cataracts

There are certain actions you can take to lower the risk of developing cataracts. Prevention methods include:

  • Eating a diet high in vitamins A, C, and E.
  • Eating foods high in lutein, zeaxanthin, and statin.  Leaf vegetables contain a lot of these nutrients.
  • Wearing sunglasses that block out ultraviolet light.
  • Avoidance of tobacco smoke.
  • Exercising caution in certain situations. For instance, using fireworks safety can do a lot to prevent eye trauma.
  • Visiting an optometry clinic to ask for advice from a doctor. An eye doctor can offer the best science-based advice on how best to prevent this condition.
