Pink Eye Relief at Sevigny & Associates Eye Care

       pink eye

Pink eye is a cute-sounding nickname for a nasty problem. This inflammation of the white of the eye, more properly known as conjunctivitis, can cause acute discomfort, limit your vision, and in some cases even spread from family member to family member. It's a condition you need to address, especially since complications can result in corneal damage. Fortunately, we can diagnose the cause of your pink eye and administer the appropriate treatment here at Sevigny & Associates Eye Care.

The Problem of Conjunctivitis

The tissue affected by pink eye is a normally-uncolored membrane called the conjunctiva, which lines the sclera (the white of the eye) and the inner surfaces of the eyelids. When this membrane becomes inflamed, it may turn pink or red in color. Other classic symptoms include intense irritation or itching, a fluid discharge from the eye, extreme sensitivity to light, swelling of the eyelid, and blurred vision.

Conjunctivitis may stem from any of several possible causes. The primary categories of the condition include viral, bacterial, and allergic conjunctivitis. Many different viruses can cause viral conjunctivitis, including chlamydia and adenoviruses. Bacterial conjunctivitis is common in schoolchildren, but contact lens and eye makeup wearers can also transmit bacteria to their eyes. The bacterial form of the condition tends to create a thicker discharge than the viral form. Allergic conjunctivitis may be a seasonal issue in response to certain pollens, or it may be a year-round reaction to environmental irritants.

Diagnosis and Treatment From Our Optometry Team

Some types of pink eye, if left untreated, can go on to scar or otherwise damage the cornea, possibly causing long-term vision loss in the affected eye. That's why it's so important to get your conjunctivitis symptoms checked out at Sevigny & Associates Eye Care. (Pink eye in newborns is especially dangerous, calling for immediate treatment.) Any of our skilled optometrists in Lake Placid, Sebring, Arcadia, or Wauchula FL can evaluate your eyes, medical history, use of cosmetics or contacts, and any known allergies to discover the specific cause of your problem. Once we identify the underlying issue, we can prescribe the most effective combination of treatments to get your eye back to its normal state of health. These treatments may include:

  • Warm compresses to soothe irritation and clear away discharge
  • Anti-viral drugs to treat a specific virus
  • Antibiotics to tame a bacterial infection
  • Antihistamines to relieve allergy symptoms
  • Changes in your eye makeup or contact lens routine to reduce the odds of infection
